The Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofía was established in Madrid in 1991 with the purpose to endow Spain with a centre of high level musical training for the talented young musicians. In this way, the need that the best Spanish artists had to leave their country in order to pursue the required higher education, came to an end.
The Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia is open to students from any part of the world, but has a special commitment with the promotion of music students from Spain, Portugal and the Latin American area, with an aim to compensate the shortcomings of these countries in the field of education.
The background of the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia can be found in the Santander International Piano Competition, which was launched by Paloma O’Shea in 1972, and in the Master Classes she organized, beginning in 1981, in collaboration with the Universidad Internacional de Verano Menéndez Pelayo, also in Santander.
