The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Romania announces the start of the Korean cultural weeks. This year’s Korean cultural weeks are to be held from Nov.1 to Nov.28 in several locations and promises to feature live performances, food, exhibition, as well as workshop activities and movie night out, in Bucharest and Timisoara.
Together with the Romanian-American University (and the Romanian-Korean Study Center), the series of events starts with the 4th edition of K-Lovers Festival, spread over 2 days, from Nov.1 – 2, 2019, in Bucharest. Starting with the Opening Gala on November 1, 18:30, Aula Magna of the University, the Festival will include several awards ceremonies for various cultural contests organized throughout the year and promises an unforgettable evening fully immersed in traditional Korean music and modern works alike – together with “Beautiful Mind”. The evening cannot be ended without fully enjoying the Korean traditional food feast and exhibition on “Mackan Art”, downstairsin the C Lobby of the Romanian-American University.
For the second day, starting with 11:00AM, Romanian-American University, the organizers are preparing workshops/classes for those interested in Korean traditional calligraphy, Samulnori (Korean percussion music), Korean fan dance (부채춤/ Buchaechum) and, of course, K-POP Dance Choreography. Two special sessions of 1-hour each will be organized on “Mackan Art”, where a limited number of persons can participate in making their own Mackan art piece. Opened to everyone, without registration, will be a special Hanbok Photo Booth, where you can wear a traditional Korean costume and receive a photo of yourself for free! For all the participants in the workshops, lunch will be organized with tasty Korean dishes and soft drinks.
Access is free of charge on Opening Gala and all workshops, based on a prior registration via on-line form available on the links below. Please kindly note the Facebook event page for more information:

- What is mackan art?
“Mackan” literally means barley stalks. Mackan art was developed by Lee Sang-Soo in 1983. It utilized the luster and varying shades of the interior of barley stalks to form a mosaic on a wooden panel or other materials.
The mosaic is later coated with lacquer for preservation. In essence, mackan art was reinvented from traditional straw craft in ancient times that continues to be used today. To form a mosaic in mackan art, barley stalks are soaked in hot water and then air-dried. The dried stalks are cut and applied to a surface to form images and finally, coated with varnish or wax.
