Compozitor versatil, Catalin Cretu este unul dintre reprezentantii generatiei actuale de creatori romani, preocupat cu precadere de cercetarea si scrierea muzicii eletronice.
Nascut in 1971, Catalin Cretu are o dubla formatie, de inginer in profilul electromecanic si compozitor, dobandita prin urmarea cursurilor Facultatii de Masini si Instalaţii Electromecanice la Universitatea Tehnica din Petrosani si Universitatii Nationale de Muzica din Bucuresti, sectiile Pedagogie muzicala si Compozitie, ultima absolvita sub indrumarea profesorilor Adrian Iorgulescu si Dan Dediu.
Atras de domeniul muzical Catalin Cretu a aprofundat studiul artei sunetelor in cadrul unui master in Compozitie multimedia absolvit la Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Hamburg, si mai apoi, al unui doctorat finalizat cu obtinerea titlului de doctor in muzica la Universitatea Nationala de Muzica din Bucuresti, conducatorul stiintific al lucrarii sale fiind profesorul Octavian Nemescu.
Bursier al Scolii post-doctorale MIDAS, Catalin Cretu are o creatie destul de bogata in care se regasec lucrari in diferite genuri, de la muzica de camera si opusuri simfonice la muzica electronica, muzica asistata de calculator, lucrari multimedia, etc. Multe dintre acestea au fost achizitionate de Biroul simfonic al UCMR si i-au adus lui Catalin Cretu mai multe premii importante la concursuri de gen organizate de UCMR sau UNMB.
Membru fondator al revistei culturale Opus, Catalin Cretu desfasoara si o intensa activitate didactica si de cercetare in cadrul Universitatii Nationale de Muzica unde este cadru didactic asociat si coordonator al Centrului de Muzica electroacustica si Multimedia.
Catalin Cretu is a Romanian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, piano, electroacoustic, and multimedia works that have been performed in Europe; he is also active as a writer.
Catalin Cretu studied at a music school in Petroşani from 1977–85 and studied electromechanics at the Technical University of Petroşani from 1990–95. Catalin Cretu studied musical pedagogy at the Western University of Timişoara from 1993–95 and studied pedagogy at the National University of Music in Bucharest from 1995–98, where he also studied composition with Dan Dediu and Adrian Iorgulescu from 1996–2001 and where he earned his DMus under Octavian Nemescu in 2008. Catalin Cretu studied with Peter Michael Hamel at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg in 2001–02, as a student of the ERASMUS programme, and multimedia composition with Georg Hajdu there from 2005–07. He had post-graduate studies at the Institute for Advanced Study of the New European College in Bucharest in 2004–05. He had further studies at Český Krumlov in 2000, Bayreuth in 2001 and Darmstadt in 2002.
Catalin Cretu served as music secretary at the National University of Music in Bucharest from 2002–08, where he has worked as a researcher at the Center for Electroacoustic Music and Multimedia since 2008.
Catalin Cretu also served a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris (2009), on a George Enescu grant from the Romanian Cultural Institute. His music has been performed in France, Germany and Romania.

Multumiri d-lui Catalin Cretu pentru unul dintre cele mai frumoase daruri pe care le-am primit in viata mea. Odata, demult, cand eram amandoi foarte tineri intr-o excursie in care ne nimerisem impreuna m-a sfatuit sa imi cumpar un vinil In the Court of the Crimson King. Mai inainte am ascultat a nu stiu cata oara Epitaph de pe acest album (online pentru ca pick-up-ul nu mai merge de mult) si mi-am amintit de el. L-am cautat pe internet si mi-am zis ca ceea ce trebuie spus, chiar daca dupa zeci de ani, tot trebuie spus.
